Knicki Markolf
Knicki Markolf’s art is closely connected to her Mexican ancestry, which is expressed through her love of brilliant colors and her passion for stories. The somewhat Native aesthetic of these carvings comes from the intrinsic spirit within the stone. Markolf works with the stones to release the power of their stories.

I believe that the stones are our oldest story keepers,” says Markolf. “The myths and legends we pass from generation to generation which stir our collective memories, and the stories we tell ourselves so that we can come to understandings. Over time the stones have collected an incomprehensible amount of stories that are waiting to be unearthed through carving. Stories are considered medicine and so powerful that we only have to listen. That is what I do; I listen with my eyes and with my soul.”
For Markolf, art making is an ongoing process of letting go, of listening and watching. She lets the stone aid her in unraveling its mystery, teaching her its story, bringing that mystery forward.
